Matei

Based in Bucharest, I’ve been passionate about photography ever since I was a teenager. It all started when I “borrowed” my dad’s film SLR. In the beginning it was difficult to convince my parents to fund my hunger for fresh film, but after a while they kind of got used to it.
Funny enough, I didn’t go to art school but studied advertising & PR instead. These were four years I didn’t particularly like, so I didn’t even end up working in that domain. Started a job with HP back in 2004 and worked my way up to the top. All this time i never stopped taking pictures. But they were always for myself, taken usually during my weekly motorbike trips. It wasn’t only till 2007 that I realised I could make a living out of my passion. So I decided to go to a photo school at the students union. For th
e next year I went thru a crash course about all the things I never had: Studio lights, bounce, snoots, softboxes, lightmeters… portrait -, product -, and food photography. Other than that, I’m pretty much self thought, with the occasional workshop here and there. It’s amazing what you can learn from a book, once you open it.
It wasn’t long till I started getting some jobs, and before I knew it I was booked every weekend. Weddings at most in the beginning but then I did the occasional portrait shoot. The Gods smiled down on me and in the summer of 2009 I got a job with Image photo services – a photo concession based in Miami FL. They hire photographers and send them on cruise ships to take portraits. During my 8 months stay, i developed a real passion for portrait photography. As luck would have it, I got transferred to the Oasis of the Seas pretty soon in my contract. There I had the opportunity to play with the latest gear and work in a fully equipped studio on a daily basis.
Now back in Bucharest, I look forward to a career as a portrait photographer. Although I can’t stay away from street photography, and occasionally take some food shots too, no challange is too small, or too great. It’s all a great pleasure to me.
looking forward to hearing from you.
regards,
